In a private session for you and three friends, learn the basics of creating a linocut. Find out what makes an effective linocut design and how to use tools safely to carve your block. At the end of the session, all participants will print a small edition of your own single colour linocut to take home with you.

This 4-hour workshop is beginner friendly, with no previous experience required. This is the perfect activity for a birthday, hen-do or stag-do, or as a team-building exercise.

This workshop can be held at a date and time that suits you.

    • All materials are provided, with access to professional-grade tools.

    • 4 hours of specialist guidance by an experienced printmaker, with a short half-time break.

    • What makes an effective linocut design.

    • The variety of printmaking materials available.

    • How to handle tools correctly and safely.

    • Transferring your drawing onto a lino block.

    • Carving techniques and ways of mark making.

    • How to roll out ink and apply it to the block.

    • How to burnish by hand and the opportunity to try a printing press.

    • Common mistakes and how to prevent them.

    • A session aimed at complete beginners with no experience required.

    • We’ll start with talking about the tools and the materials we’ll be using in the session.

    • We’ll have a practice using the tools, so that you can gain confidence in creating your linocut.

    • We’ll discuss what makes an effective linocut design, and take a look at how your image can be turned into a linocut.

    • We’ll transfer your design to the block and start to carve. Guidance will be provided on different ways you can carve your block to make effective marks that will compliment your design.

    • We’ll ink up our blocks and hand burnish our prints, or try using a printing press.

    • Each participant will take home their carved linocut block, a small edition of prints and a workshop handout.

    • Demonstrations will be provided throughout the session, with the opportunity to ask plenty of questions.

    • Session capacity is limited to 4 people to ensure quality of teaching.

    • Please bring with you either a drawing or an image you’d like to turn into a linocut. Bring along a few if you are unsure, and we’ll discuss which will work best.

    • We will be working in single colour (likely black) so a strong black and white image would work best.

    • We’ll be working to A5 (15cm x 21cm), so please bring your image to this size.

    • Example images will also be provided if you’re stuck for ideas or imagery.

    • Printing can be messy! Bring an apron or wear something you don’t mind getting stained.

    • All tools will be provided, but if you have any of your own you are welcome to bring them too.

    • Bring a positive attitude to try something fun! There is no such thing as a stupid question and there is no pressure to make your best work in this session!

  • Frankie Brown has been creating linocuts and perfecting her craft since 2016. She holds a BA (Hons) in Illustration, graduating from the University of Portsmouth in 2011.

    Frankie Brown also works part-time at Handprinted in Bognor Regis; providing studio assistance in several printmaking techniques, one-to-one tuition and teaching in her specialism of linocut.

  • If you are unable to attend a workshop:

    Please note that workshops are non-refundable, but I may be able to transfer you to another workshop date (space permitting) if you provide me with at least two week’s notice. If you are no longer able to attend your session, please email hello@frankiebrown.co.uk to discuss.

    If you do not provide two week’s notice, unfortunately I cannot offer you a transfer to another date, or a refund.

    Alternatively, you may sell your space to a friend, who can attend in your place.

    My right to cancel a workshop:

    Should I need to cancel a workshop due to unforeseen circumstances, I will aim to give you as much notice as possible of the cancellation. I will offer to transfer you to another session (space permitting) or a refund.

    Unfortunately I cannot accept any liability for travel costs or any other costs incurred due to the cancellation.

    • Age Restriction - Please note that this workshop is not suitable for children under 16, and you must be 16+ to attend.

    • Hazards - Workshops are held in a working studio. We will be using sharp tools and operating equipment that could cause injury if incorrectly used. By booking onto a workshop you are agreeing to take full responsibility of your own health and safety. Health and safety will be covered as part of the session, so please observe the guidance provided and practice caution.
